“Welcome to our studio in the Highlands of Scotland from where we bring you this first box-set of The Elphen Tutorials – our latest addition to the growing collection of behind-the-scenes videos; which form part of our initiative to share with everyone the myriad creative processes and artistic contributions that go into the making of Paul Taggart’s Elphen Chronicles.

However, these are not merely behind-the-scenes videos … THESE ARE COMPREHENSIVE TUTORIALS, which follow the same principles that we apply to all of my painting tutorials – in other words, they are detailed, work-along tutorials; filmed in real-time, with nothing left out, so that you too can capture the many features and aspects of the Elphen.

The first book in my Elphen Chronicles related the tale of Lacewing and her human companion Artimus Glin. One of the illustrations in that book captured the three Elphen Warriors, Bloodsword, Serpentspear and Thunderaxe – a watercolour painting that attracted the most questions about what process I had used to depict their luminescent, transparent wings.

And so … we are delighted to show you exactly how to achieve the ethereally transparent wings of Webstrand, the Tooth Gatherer, the subject of my second book.

Close-up filming will show you exactly how the techniques are applied and behave on the surface. You will see how to mix the colours on your palette, how to exploit your brush-strokes, how to make masking fluid work for you, how to draw out and ink in, how to achieve transparency through controlling your paint mixes and exploiting lift-off and losing edges. The list of hints, tips and techniques that you will pick up from working-along with me in painting Webstrand, the Tooth Gatherer will prove invaluable and can be applied to any subject.

In addition to the standing portrait of Webstrand, the Tooth Gatherer, we also show you HOW TO PAINT Webstrand’s wings when fully open, HOW TO PAINT the Tooth Gatherer’s Pouch, HOW TO PAINT Webstrand’s elegant hands on which she wears her Elphen Eye-Ring and, finally, HOW TO PAINT the Rememble & Forgettle Dust Shakers that protect the Elphen secrets.

We look forward to your company on this magical painting journey and as always, this comes with best wishes for your painting, from Eileen and myself, not to mention, Sunita and Liza and of course, our Elphen friends, Webstrand and Starfire.”
