Episode 251: How to Draw a Realistic Fabric Knot Step by Step

The first step is to tie a knot in a piece of fabric, put it in strong light and then look at what you can see.

Begin drawing by drawing a loose sketch, with a soft dark pencil, 4B if you have one, of everything you can see, just to get the basic shapes onto your paper. These are guidelines and will change later, as we notice and observe more.

Then draw parts of lines and parts of shapes with a darker line, then draw the tones you see by shading away from the lines, noticing where the tones are and drawing what you see.

The last step is to draw a very dark shadow and blend or soften any lines or areas you need to work back into.
