“Welcome to ‘[Series 3] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Watercolours with Paul Taggart’ in which we pull together the techniques of Wet on Wet and Wet on Dry – previously covered in other box-sets, such as ‘[Series 1] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Watercolours with Paul Taggart’ and ‘[Series 2] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Watercolours with Paul Taggart’.
I refer to this method of working in three principal layers as the Combination Technique; the purpose of this method being to exploit the individual strengths of the Wet on Wet and Wet on Dry techniques, to produce a rich, clean watercolour, full of light, colour, depth and varying focus.
The first layer of wet-on-wet is applied thinly and loosely to block in the lightest lights that appear in our subject; on which we will be building ever-darkening colours.
The second layer of wet-on-wet offers us the chance to exploit the rich dark colours which can only be achieved with this exciting technique.
The third layer of wet-on-dry is where focus and accents are manipulated to lead the viewer in the direction that you wish their journey through your subject to take.
Getting used to handling watercolour paint in this form is really exciting, for it allows you to fully appreciate the power of painting in watercolours.
Firstly you are introduced to the Combination Method through a simple landscape study in Lesson 1 & 2, intended to give you the opportunity to practice a more suggestive approach. From Lessons 3 to 10 you can then concentrate the main composition, on a landscape vista, taking you on that journey from start-to-finish.
As with all of our tutorials, this box-set is filmed in real-time, to ensure you receive a comprehensive step-by-step experience of mixing colours, understanding the effect of brush-stroke, every blend and the process of layering from light to dark.
So don’t think of this box-set merely as a work-along for the subjects featured, think of each video as a stand-alone lesson for any particular aspect in that tutorial – we have tried to help you identify what that might be in our description for each lesson, to help you focus on one particular technique.
