“Welcome to [Series 4] of Learn to Enjoy Painting in Watercolours with Paul Taggart; in which we exploit two, quite different, ‘masks’ that will excite and enhance surface colours and surface colour mixing and will also enable you to introduce various textural effects. Through this process I hope to encourage you to experiment with these simple ‘tools’ to gain a deeper understanding of the process of working in layers and how to maximise the effects of both these additional tools and the layering process – the two tools being masking fluid and a common household candle.

When we select subjects for our tutorials, we carefully choose subjects that would best suit the technique that we are covering – so it is with the two subjects featured in this box-set. They were selected specifically for their textural qualities and, in the case of the main painting; there is the additional need to protect a mass of delicate flowers and foliage which are central to the overall composition.

The method used for the main composition is that which I refer to as my ‘combination method’; in other words, three principal layers, the first two using the Wet on Wet technique, with finishing touches and accents rendered in Wet on Dry –
as covered in ‘[Series 3] Learn to Enjoy Painting in Watercolours with Paul Taggart’ – https://vimeo.com/ondemand/ltewatercolourseries3

Series 4 kicks off with Lesson 1 and the PREPARATORY STUDY of a pineapple in a ceramic dish; the purpose of which is to bring together the different characteristics of masking fluid and candle wax, not only to achieve texture, but also, to help control the nature of your colours in the three layers.

This study is covered in detail from start-to-finish through to Lesson 3, at which point we switch to the MAIN COMPOSITION from Lesson 4 through to Lesson 10; for which we supply free-to-download reference photographs. You can work-along with me on the same subjects, or choose one of your own – it is entirely up to you – https://www.flickr.com/photos/paul_taggart_artist_and_author/

We have already covered the reference gathering, thumbnails and tonal drawing of the MAIN COMPOSITION in our box-set ‘Composition Matters’ and as such, start work on this from the drawing-out stage – https://vimeo.com/ondemand/techscompositionmatters

Finally, two Painting Topical Technique tutorials make up this box-set. The first is there to help you understand the role of masking fluid when layering in watercolours; whilst the second shows how to work with candle wax as a resist – both of which use the same subject, so that you can compare the effects of each ‘resist’ and subsequently with the study in Lessons 1 to 3.

We look forward to your company and as always, send you best wishes for your painting, from Eileen and myself.”
