User reviews

I’m not a professional artist, nor very good at watercolor. But I do own a lot of brands of watercolor paints, paper and brushes, low-, and high-ends, student and artist grade. So I think I’m qualified to say that this is a good set for beginners. Everything included, for its price tag, is in decent quality. Colors are very good choices with cool and warm vibrant colors and good earth tones that spread well. My only complain is it does not have a good purple. Paper is better than many cheap ones I have tried. I have not tested the brushes yet but they look ok enough although probably not made specifically for watercolor. The palette doesn’t look cheaper at all which is quite surprising because plastic palettes can easily look cheap. Water does bead up as it does on most plastic palettes. So some kind of surface treatment, such as scrubbing with toothpaste or glue, is needed if you want your paint to spread well on this palette. Now if we leave the price out of the picture, then this set is just ok, not the best among the low-end ones I have, and has certainly some distance from the top brands. The attached picture is some swatching I did on the paper from this set, with my best 18 colors (mostly Windsor & Newton professional and a few Daniel Smith) on the top three rows and the 24 colors from this set on the bottom). The most obvious is their low pigment load compared to the professionals. This is not really a negative thing about this set because it is expected. But I wanted to show you how they compare. So overall, this will be a solid purchase if you have a low budget. But it won’t give you the full taste of the beauty of watercolor.
Well - what a nice set for so little money. I watched a few of the online video tutorials and completed the bamboo flat wash and the glass bottle. They were shown very clearly and i found them fun to do. I then decided to give these paints a try doing what I love :portraits SO MUCH fun! These little set for under $22 delivers in a big way! The paints are vibrant, they mix and blend well, and they lift easily. The synthetic brushes hold a lot of paint and have good tips. I was able to draw with the small round. The paper is very forgiving as you can lift most paints easily. This makes a great gift or a nice little inexpensive plein air set. I am really enjoying them!
What a lovely, affordable *everything you need to get started with watercolor* kit from Chromatek! I was so surprised at how pigmented the fresh watercolors are in this kit. The online tutorials are awesome—I had 12 minutes of zen during my lunch break painting this landscape, practicing wet in wet color gradients. The paper has a template with light marks to show you exactly where to tape, even though I took a more rustic approach. The 3 brushes, 2 rounds and 1 flat, have a nice spring to them, and the mixing pan is a great size. So much fun in this kit!
