Combination Watercolours with Paul Taggart – ‘Out and About with Paul at Foulis Castle’

Welcome to ‘Out and About with Paul’ where you join me at my easel during two different events hosted by Foulis Castle here in the Northern Highlands of Scotland.

On both occasions it was our pleasure to donate my finished painting to each respective beneficiary, for fund-raising purposes.

AND WE FILMED THE ENTIRE PROCESS FROM START-TO-FINISH, SO THAT EACH COULD BE FOLLOWED AS A TUTORIAL IN MY COMBINATION TECHNIQUE FOR WATERCOLOURS; WORKING IN LAYERS FROM LIGHT TO DARK.

The combination technique utilises the Wet on Wet technique for the first two layers; with the third layer bringing the Wet on Dry into play for final details, focus and accents.

PLEASE READ THE FULL DESCRIPTIONS FOR EACH VIDEO so that YOU ARE FULLY INFORMED OF THE DIFFERENCE IN THESE TWO SUBJECTS and THE BENEFIT OF EACH.

SET 1 is a sweeping vista of house and garden; a gentle subject.

SET 2 will prove invaluable IF YOU FEEL INTIMIDATED BY THE IDEA OF PAINTING BUILDINGS, THIS TUTORIAL WILL HELP YOU OVERCOME THAT FEAR; FOR IT WILL DEMONSTRATE THAT ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES can be suggestive and do not necessarily require detailed drawing and ‘architectural’ style rendering.

The first two episodes of this box-set were filmed during the Daffodil Tea which was hosted by the Munro family on behalf of the Lifeboat Station at Invergordon.

AS WITH ALL OF MY TUTORIALS THIS IS FILMED IN REAL-TIME, so that you can follow my every move, every colour mix and brush-stroke. You are led step-by-step from the first thumbnails, through the drawing out process, applying masking fluid to protect highlight areas, the first and second layers of wet-on-wet and finally to the finishing touches produced with wet-on-dry strokes.

All caught with close-up shots, so that nothing is left out.

We hope you enjoy this on-the-spot painting, in which there are occasional breaks as I am interrupted to say hello to visitors and friends – not to mention the slowly disappearing daffodils which carpet the foreground of the scene before me.

The third and fourth episodes were filmed during the Clan Munro Highland Gathering of 2014 – hosted by the Clan Chief, Hector Munro of Foulis; who requested the very distinctive view of the castle and garden seen through the archway of the surrounding stone wall.

This is an object lesson in combining two views to achieve the desired result; as you will discover in my detailed explanation of how thumbnails are essential in such a situation.

Again, in spite of constant interruptions and the onset of wet weather, this is a detailed step-by-step tutorial, accompanied by my running commentary in which you will pick up myriad hints and tips on many different elements.

You will learn how to not only deal with ‘hard’ architectural objects, such as the building, stone steps, garden features and so on; but also with the ‘softer’ elements, such as flowers and plants, the gravel drive and clouds in the sky.

Light and shade play a key part in this composition; which relies on a suggestive touch to prevent it becoming hard and overly detailed.

Value-for-money is our philosophy and this twin two-part tutorials box-set is available to rent or buy at a fraction of the cost that you would pay for a similar overall length DVD.

Best wishes for your painting, from Eileen and Paul
