[Series 1] – ‘Learn To Enjoy Painting’ in Watercolours with Paul Taggart

This series of lessons would suit complete beginners and those seeking to understand the Wet on Dry technique in watercolours. For the Wet on Wet technique, see Series 2 and in Series 3 Artist & Author Paul Taggart shares his three layer Combination method, of two layers Wet on Wet, finishing off with a layer of Wet on Dry.

The experience of painting in watercolours can vary considerably. There are the three principal techniques for instance – Line & Wash : Wet on Dry and Wet on Wet.

Each of which can be exploited.
Any of which can be combined.
All of which can be developed by you to achieve your personal style.

FOR THIS SERIES Paul exploits the Wet on Dry technique in Watercolours to demonstrate a simple land/seascape that has a vista of a composition. This allows him to demonstrate how aerial perspective works, how recession and focus works, how reflections work, how movement is captured and how to introduce figures, without the need for a comprehensive understand of figure painting.

READ THE DESCRIPTIONS FOR EACH EPISODE to understand fully what each contains – for this is not merely a step-by-step painting tutorial – it is a boxed-set packed full of handy hints, tips and techniques.

Filmed in real-time, so that Paul Taggart can guide you gently and in detail through the various stages, from beginning to end; there is no speed-painting here. You are watching every stroke as it is applied in real-time and at such close quarters that you can clearly see how the strokes work on the surface and how the colours are mixed on Paul’s palette.

As an ‘added extra’ you are also introduced to the wonders of colour mixing through a simple, yet effective method, based on Paul’s core palette of six colours.

The traditional watercolour painting technique of working from light to dark forms the basis of this project.

You can either work along with Paul on the same subject, or select one of your own – whatever you choose to do, you are encouraged to treat it as an exercise – a practice project – rather than a painting composition.

SUBJECT – for this simple land/seascape painting, Paul works from a photograph – to show that using photographic references is not cheating, as many might suppose. The subject was chosen as representing some of the most commonly requested elements for a tutorial – clouds, sea, shoreline, hills and people.
